When Democrats regain control of Congress and the White House, their top priority must be to reform the Supreme Court. Whether that means court expansion, implementing term limits, or something else. When our country’s founders established the court with lifetime appointments, they’d assumed that the justices would be non-partisan and objective. However, we know that this is not the case with today’s court. 

Over the past decade, the Republican party has stolen the majority on the court, appointed far-right partisan judges to it, and used the majority to make numerous anti-democratic rulings including:

• Effectively overturning the Voting Rights Act to dilute minority political power
• Legalizing racial gerrymandering to give Republicans an electoral advantage
• Destroying affirmative action
• Declaring the President to be above the law
• Green-lighting state level (including Alabama) censorship and surveillance laws
• Overturning its own legal precedents to help Republicans retain legislative power despite the will of the American people

The Supreme Court is no longer an unbiased referee……...it is clearly playing for one of the teams. The Constitution effectively made them a completely unaccountable body, but the Constitution is not perfect and neither were the people who wrote it. Democrats cannot continue fighting with one hand tied behind their backs while Republicans turn America into an autocracy. We will either have Supreme Court reform, or we will no longer have freedom.
